Ajang penghargaan ini dilakukan setiap tahun dan melibatkan berbagai unsur di industri game dunia. Selain itu, Golden Joystick Awards merupakan salah satu ajang penghargaan paling bergengsi di industri game.
Salah satu kategori penghargaan di ajang ini adalah Lifetime Achievement yang diberikan kepada sosok kreator game dengan dedikasi penuh terhadap industri game. Tahun ini pemenang penghargaan Lifetime Achievement adalah Sid Meier, kreator game yang dikenal dengan seri game strategi Civilization.
"Saya tidak akan disini tanpa kalian," ujar Meier saat menerima penghargaan Lifetime Achievement di Golden Joystick Awards 2017.
"Kepada semua penggemar seri game Pirates!, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, dan game lain yang tidak saya bisa sebut satu per satu, terimakasih. Tanpa kalian, saya tidak akan bisa memiliki pekerjaan terbaik di dunia."
