Hari Guru Sedunia pertama kali diproklamasikan oleh UNESCO pada 1994 untuk mengenang penandatanganan Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers pada 1966. Dokumen tersebut menegaskan standar hak dan tanggung jawab guru, serta mendorong peningkatan kualitas pendidikan di seluruh dunia.
Tema dan Makna Hari Guru Sedunia 2025
Setiap tahun, Hari Guru Sedunia mengusung tema yang berbeda. Tema pada tahun ini yaitu "Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession”. Tema ini menekankan pentingnya kolaborasi transformatif untuk memperkuat sistem pendidikan dan mempertahankan tenaga pendidik agar tidak meninggalkan profesinya.
