The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences juga membuat gebrakan melihat nominator yang tak hanya berasal dari aktor dan aktris kulit putih. Seperti diketahui, ajang Oscar tahun lalu dan sebelumnya mendapat kritik pedas lantaran didominasi aktor dan aktris kulit putih.
Tujuh nominator dari etnis minoritas pada ajang Oscar kali ini, antara lain Best Supporting Actor untuk Mahershala Al (Moonlight) dan Dev Patel (Lion), Best Supporting Actreess untuk Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Best Actor untuk Denzel Washington (Fences), dan Best Actress untuk Ruth Negga (Loving).
Oscar 2017 dipandu Jimmy Kimmel, dan disiarkan dari channel ABC pada 26 Februari mendatang.
