Jokowi Invites Japan to Invest in Natuna

Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo invited Japan to invest in Natuna, Riau Islands. This was said when Jokowi received Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
 
"I want to invite Japan to invest in Natuna," Jokowi said at the Merdeka Palace on Friday, January 10, 2020.
 
Jokowi appreciated the cooperation between the two countries to develop an integrated marine and fisheries center in Natuna. He hoped that Japan would immediately disburse funds for the second phase of the project.

The former Governor of DKI Jakarta wants the two countries to maintain good relations. He believes Japan is one of Indonesia's main trade and economic partners.
 
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto also joined the meeting. Meanwhile, Motegi was accompanied by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masafumi Ishii and other Japanese officials.
 
Based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, Natuna’s waters is a part of Indonesia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Indonesian military recently deployed eight Navy vessels to patrol Natuna’s waters.
