Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated the new ASEAN Secretariat building in South Jakarta on Thursday, August 8, 2019.
"This new building represents ASEAN's new spirit, the New ASEAN," The Foreign Ministry quoted President Jokowi as saying.
President Jokowi was accompanied by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by ASEAN Secretary General Lim Jock Hoi and a number of high-ranking officials from ASEAN member countries.
"ASEAN must be able to maintain its centrality in the future," President Jokowi was quoted as saying.
Proposed by Indonesia, ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific was adopted by the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand in June 2019. During the forum, President Jokowi expressed his appreciation for all ASEAN countries that had made major contributions to the development of the Outlook.
According to President Jokowi, the Outlook represents the centrality and force of ASEAN in upholding the principles of peacekeeping, fostering a culture of dialog, and strengthening cooperation. In addition, it is increasingly relevant to the world's developments today.
Furthermore, President Jokowi said that ASEAN shall hold strong, unite, and assume its role as the motor of peace and stability of Southeast Asia.
