Jakarta: Indonesia has welcomed the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2503 (2019) which renews the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for a period of six months.
Indonesian Permanent Representatives to the UN Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani highlighted the importance of the safety and security of UNDOF peacekeepers. He believes that UNDOF remains an impartial entity.
"It is important for all parties to halt all activities that endanger UN peacekeepers on the ground," he said in a press release issued on Monday, December 30, 2019.
According to him, Indonesia recognizes Golan as an inalienable part of the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. Therefore, it strongly rejects the recognition of Golan as part of Israel.
The region was occupied by Israel in 1967. It was unilaterally annexed by Israel in 1981.
US President Donald Trump proclaimed that the US recognizes that the Golan Heights are part of Israel. The 28 member states of the European Union declared in turn they do not recognize Israeli sovereignty.
