Jakarta: The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has handed over 14 fishermen from Aceh who were previously arrested by Myanmar authorities for entering the country's territorial waters.
Around 16 fishermen were detained in the city of Kawthaung for more than two months. 14 of them were released by the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon on January 24.
The fishermen landed at Iskandar Muda International Airport this afternoon. They then joined a handover ceremony at Aceh Governor's official residence.
"We have close relations with Foreign Ministry officials," acting Aceh Governor Nova Iriansyah told reporters on Wednesday.
"We believe that the government will work hard to protect Indonesian citizens abroad," he added.
According to reports, one of the fishermen passed away in Myanmar. In the meantime, the boat captain will go on trial in February.
