Anggi Tondi Martaon • 22 September 2020 18:06
Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has said that the General Elections Commission (KPU) should complete the revision of KPU's Regulation (PKPU) Number 10 Year 2020 before September 26.

The PKU is the legal basis of the implementation of the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections. The campaign period is expected to begin on September 26.

"We will start the campaign period on that date," the former Constitutional Court (MK) chief justice said during a virtual press conference here on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the revision aims to prevent the spread of covid-19 during the campaign period. To that end, the KPU wants to limit or prohibit several campaign activities, including concerts, convoys and public gatherings.

"We want to limit or prohibit activities that can attract crowds. Those events are prone to become covid-19 clusters," KPU commissioner Evi Novida Ginting Manik stated.

Voters will cast their vote on December 9. Local elections will be held in 270 regions, comprising nine provinces, 37 municipalities and 224 regencies.
