Papua Police to Monitor 8 Conflict Prone Regions

Jayapura: As many as eight regions are considered to be conflict-prone ahead of the anniversary of Free Papua Movement (OPM) this weekend.
 
These regions are, Jayawijaya Regency, Mimika Regency, Intan Jaya Regency, Yahukimo Regency, Tolikara Regency, Nduga Regency, Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency.
 
“We will always carry out supervision and reconnaissance on these areas ahead of the upcoming event which is held annually.” said the Regional Police Chief of Papua, Paulus Waterpauw, on Monday.

He admitted that there will not be additional military assistance. He said that the current number of security personnel in Papua is enough.
 
“There have so far been 5,000 personnel of Mobile Brigade Corps deployed by 14 regional police departments since the beginning of riot in Jayapura which occurred a few months ago,” he said.
 
Paulus warned the public to avoid hoaxes and fake news. He also asked them not to be afraid.
 
“The public will continue carrying out their daily activities. We will always preserve public order until this year ends,” he said. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
