Jakarta: Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has urged the Home Affairs Ministry to evaluate the operations of political parties
ICW has also welomed the ministry's plan to evaluate the electoral system in the country.
“The restructuration of organizational structure of political parties is the main precondition that must be fulfilled prior to changing the current electoral system," ICW researcher Ahmad Kurnia said here on Tuesday, November 19, 2019.
"Without the restructuration, the high cost of politics will never dissapear” he added.
According to ICW, the proposed abolishment of direct regional elections is a setback. Moreover, the policy is baseless and less comprehensive.
Previously, the Home Affairs Ministry claimed that the current system causes high cost of politics. However, Kurnia argued that high cost of politics is mainly influenced by operations of political parties.
“The occurrence of money politics is the reason behind the proposed evaluation. That is not right. The problem is mainly caused by the occurrence of political bargaining which involves political parties. They must take action on that,” said Kurnia. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
