Jakarta: Chairman of Democratic Party Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) said he hopes that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will soon meet with the Gerindra Party head, Prabowo Subianto, noting that both figures have large number of supporters.
"It would be very good and noble if Pak Prabowo can meet with Pak Jokowi directly, as the two national figures have a large number of supporters and constituents," SBY said on a videotape on Monday.
He believes the two national figures have honest aspirations for the country. SBY said that in such a meeting, there should not be any agreement prior to their meeting.
"If Pak Prabowo is still suing at the Constitutional Court, I believe Pak Jokowi will also respect the constitutional measures taken by Pak Prabowo," he said.
Prabowo Subianto officially challenged on Friday (24/5) the final vote tally by the General Elections Commission (KPU) — which has placed President Joko Widodo as the winner of the 2019 presidential election — at the Constitutional Court.
According to the election agency, Jokowi gathered 85,607,362 votes or 55.5 percent of the votes. On the other hand, his rival Prabowo Subianto collected 68,650,239 votes or 45.5 percent of the votes.
Indonesia held the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters elected the president, vice president as well as members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
In order to run for presidency, Jokowi was endorsed by PDI Perjuangan, Golkar Party, PKB, PPP, NasDem Party, Hanura Party, PKPI, PBB and PSI. In the meantime, Prabowo was supported by Gerindra Party, Democratic Party, PKS, PAN and Berkarya Party.
Last week, the former Jakarta governor met with former President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, former President Megawati Soekarnoputri and former Vice President Try Sutrisno on Tuesday. In addition, the media-savvy leader also received PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan and Democratic Party joint task command head Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY). (Antara)
