Jakarta: Functional Groups (Golkar) Party's Deputy Coordinator for Primary Division Bambang "Bamsoet" Soesatyo will remain as speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). Bamsoet will retain his position after withdrawing his nomination from Golkar's Chairperson Election.
Golkar’s Secretary-General Lodewijk Freidrich said that the position was given to Bamsoet from the beginning. Lodewijk stressed that the decision was not the result of lobbying.
According to him, current Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto and Bamsoet only agreed to maintain solidity. In addition, Airlangga also promised to embrace Bamsoet loyalists to occupy positions in the DPR.
"There should be reasons to remove Bamsoet. These reasons do not exist," Lodewijk said after the opening of the National Congress at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Kuningan, South Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 December 2019
"Because there is no threat. That's just people talking," Lodewijk remarked.
Bamsoet withdrew his candidacy after receiving input from senior party officials. He stated his decision is an effort to maintain Golkar's unity.
Bamsoet’s withdrawing his candidacy caused Agun Gunandjar to do the same. Agun said that he wanted to maintain the spirit of reconciliation.
Ali Yahya also withdrew his candidacy, even though he passed verification. The Chairperson of the Golkar’s Tenth National Congress Adies Kadir suspects that Ali is having difficulty fulfilling the requirements.
Practically, only Ridwan Hisjam will become a competitor for Airlangga the incumbent general chairperson. However, Ridwan ensured he would not follow the steps of other candidates who withdrew.
