Jakarta: Secretary-General of the United Development Party (PPP) Arsul Sani said that direct regional elections should be reviewed immediately.
"It is time for empirical research into the benefits and disadvantages of direct elections before the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) as legislators take steps," Arsul said at the Parliamentary Complex, Central Jakarta, Friday on November 8, 2019.
The Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) explained that direct elections are more suitable to be carried out for replacing regents and mayors.
"Because of the regional autonomy adopted by our government, the emphasis is on regencies and cities, not provinces. Even the provincial head, namely the governor, is an extension of the central government rather than people's representative," he remarked
Previously, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian requested that the electoral system be reviewed. Tito said that one of the negative aspects of the current electoral system is the high cost of paricipating in elections.
"Conduct academic research on the negative and positive effects of direct elections," said Tito at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.
He was not surprised that regional heads continue to be caught by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). He argued that corruption is a shortcut to cover the high cost of participating in elections.
He made sure the Ministry of Home Affairs will support the research. He invited institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to hold studies.
According to Tito, if the results recommend that the electoral system does not need to be changed, he will look for ways to reduce the negative impact of the electoral system.
