Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has rejected the proposal to eradicate direct regional elections. The central government has ensured that Indonesian people will continue to directly elect their regional leaders.

"President Jokowi said that leaders of provinces, cities and regencies will still be directly elected," Presidential Spokesman Fadjroel Rachman said here on Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

Fadjroel explained that direct regional elections are part of democracy. He stressed that the government will only review the mechanism of direct regional elections.

"It is the implementation of the people's sovereignty and is in line with Reformation's spirit," the former activist noted.

Previously, the Home Affairs Ministry introduced a proposal to scrap direct regional elections. It argued that the current system is too costly.

"We have conducted a review in 2012. A regional election needs around Rp20-30 billion or even more," the ministry's regional autonomy director general Akmal Malik at his office on Thursday, November 7, 2019.

"That is why the minister (Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian) wants to change the electoral system. So we can reduce the costs," he added.
