Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Gondang Dam at Kerjo, Karanganyar, Central Java on Thursday, May 2, 2019.
The former Jakarta governor was accompanied by State Secretary Minister Pratikno, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin Maimoen, Karanganyar Regent Juliyatmono and Sragen Regent Kusdinar Untung Yuni Sukowati.
"The dam will be gradually filled with water. It will be fully completed by September," President Jokowi said.
The dam is designed to irrigate 4,680 hectares of paddy fields in Karanganyar and Sragen regencies. It is expected to increase rice production in the two regions.
Based on official data from related government agencies, there are only 231 dams in Indonesia, excluding the additional of 49 newly-constructed dams. According to President Jokowi, the government will immediately build Jlantah Dam in the same area, and other dams at different locations.
“We will continue building the dams. In the past five years, 49 dams are being constructed, in which the construction of several dams have been completed, among others, the Raknamo Dam, Rotiklot Dam, Gondang Dam, Sei Gong Dam, and Tanjung Mila Dam. We just need to inaugurate them,” Cabinet Secretary's website quoted the former Solo mayor as saying.
Including the 49 dams, the total of dams in the country only reaches 20 percent of the needs. Thus, the construction of dams needs to be accelerated since basic water needs is really high compared to the number of existing dams.
