3,862 Anti-Job Creation Law Protesters Detained: Police

Jakarta: The National Police on Friday announced that a total of 3,862 protesters were detained during anti-Job Creation Law rallies in several regions in Indonesia.
 
"We detained a total of 3,862 people," National Police Spokesperson Inspecter General Argo Yuwono said.
 
They include, among others, 796 anarcho-syndicalist group members, 443 college students, 419 labors and 55 unemployed workers.

The spokesman explained that most rallies were held in front of the regional legislative council building in each region. Police prioritized persuasion to maintain public order. They were not equipped with firearms to minimize tension.
 
"It was in line with our standard operating procedure," he stated.
 
On Thursday, clashes broke out between police and protesters during anti-Job Creation Law rallies. According to reports, the incidents injured dozens of protesters and police officers and damaged many public facilities and buildings.
 
On Monday, supported by almost all parties at the parliament, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) passed the Omnibus Bill on Job Creation into law. However, the controversial law is strongly opposed by labor unions and activitsts, citing lack of protecion of labor rights.
