Jakarta: House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has announced that he is running for the chairman of Golkar Party.
"I declare that I will run for the position," Bambang told a press conference here on Thursday.
Bambang said that Golkar Party must immediately improve its public image. He criticized Golkar Party's inability to attract young voters.
"If we dont make changes, we will vanish sooner or later," Bambang noted.
According to reports, Golkar Party is scheduled to hold a national congress in the end of 2019. Besides the House Speaker, current Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto is the other strong candidate.
"We will follow the schedule. It will be held in December," Airlangga told reporters last month.
Indonesia held a simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters elected the president, vice president as well as members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
Golkar Party collected 12.31 percent of the total votes in this year's legislative elections. It was slighly lower compared to the previous legislative elections.
