Jakarta: Muhammadiyah will invite incumbent President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and opposition leader to attend its national congress, Muhammadiyah General Secretary Abdul Mu'ti said Monday.
"We will not invite them as presidential candidates. We will invite them as national political leaders," the Muhammadiyah cleric told reporters.
The national congress will take place in Bengkulu province from February 15-17. The event will gather Muhammadiyah officials from across the archipelago.
Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections in April 17. Voters will elect the president, vice president as well as members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
According to the General Elections Commission (KPU), more than 190 million people will be eligible to vote. In addition to that, around 800 thousand polling station will be opened on the voting day.
In order to run for presidency, President Jokowi is endorsed by PDIP, Golkar Party, PKB, PPP, NasDem Party, Hanura Party, PKPI, PBB, Perindo Party and PSI. On the other hand, Prabowo is supported by Gerindra Party, Democratic Party, PAN, PKS and Berkarya Party.
