Jakarta: Deputy Secretary-General of the United Development Party (PPP) Achmad Baidowi claimed that direct regional elections could cause horizontal conflicts.
According to the PPP politician, conflicts usually arise because of differences in political choices.
"That is the basis for evaluating the implementation of direct regional elections," Baidowi said at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.
Baidowi revealed the high cost of participating in regional elections. He also questioned the quality of regional election winners.
"The cost is high. Meanwhile, it does not necessarily produce good regional leader," he said.
Baidowi stated that the current system should be reviewed. The review should decide whether to continue using the direct system or not.
"That will still be further discussed. We have not yet decided," he said.
