Jakarta: Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said that the government is still considering the creation of new provinces in Papua region.
The region is currently divided into two provinces namesly West Papua and Papua provinces. The region occupies the western half of the New Guinea island.
"The president has instructed the home affairs minister to study the proposal," the PDI Perjuangan politician said here on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo received 61 Papuan and West Papuan figures in Jakarta this morning. He discussed a number of issues during the meeting.
On the occasion, Jayapura Legislative Council Abisai Rollo urged the government to establish new provinces in the region. In addition, he said that the new provinces should be based on the region's seven indigenous territories.
"The legal basis is Law Number 45 of 1999," Tjahjo said.
