Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said the riots that recently occurred in Papua and Jakarta were not violations of Human Rights (HAM). He explained that the government acted as a mediator in those two events.
"The riots in Papua were between groups of people. The authorities intervened. So the people were evacuated and the rioters were hunted down," Mahfud said at the Ministry for Politics, Law and Security building, Central Jakarta on Tuesday, December 10, 2019.
In the meantime, during the May 22 riot in front of the Elections Supervisions Body (Bawaslu) Building in Jakarta, Mahfud considered that there was a persecution by the masses to local residents. He added that the police even became victims of riot brutality.

"During the demonstration, 200 police officers were injured. Some had broken bones. It's not structured and not systematic," he said.
Moreover, According to the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, human rights violations have never happened again since the fall of Soeharto's regime. A friction between groups of people is called a horizontal conflict
"After the reformation era, you can say there is none (violation of human rights). Now it does not exist," he concluded.
