Jakarta: President Joko Widodo has been urged to issue a presidential regulation as a legal basis to strengthen the already existing Forum for Inter-Faith Harmony (FKUB) to combat intolerance.
“This will help make intolerance combating efforts more effective and efficient," Setara Institute Research Director Halili said here on Sunday, November 25, 2019.
According to Halili, the current existence of FKUB is only based on the Mutual Agreement between the Religious Affairs Minister and Home Affairs Minister Number 9 and 8 year 2006.

“This has affected the supervision of FKUB and it is difficult to hold it accountable, ” said Halili.
With the issuance of the presidential regulation, the regional branches of FKUB in all of the provinces will be able to make breakthroughs in combating intolerance.
Based on the data from Setara, the province of West Java has been on the first position for the last 12 years on the list of intolerant provinces with as many as 162 intolerance-related cases occurring for the last five years.
The Institute also noted that there have been 113 intolerance-related cases in Jakarta, 98 cases in East Java, 66 cases in Central Java and 65 cases in Aceh, 37 cases in Yogyakaeta, 36 cases in Banten, 28 cases in North Sumatera, 27 cases in South Sulawesi and 23 cases in West Sumatera.
“If the FKUB is only treated as a forum, then that is problematic. How can we combat intolerance if the institution dealing with the matter is still weak?” said Halili. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
