Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo believes that the creation of a monitoring board will help make he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stronger.
"The creation of a monitoring board is needed. State intitutions like the president, the Supreme Court (MA) and the House of Representatives (DPR) should be monitored," President Jokowi said here on Friday, September 12, 2019.
The former Jakarta governor explained that the proposed monitoring board is intended to prevent abuse of power. He argued that even a president is supervised by lawmakers and the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK).
The media-savvy politician promised that the proposed monitoring board will be filled with activists and scholars. He added that the members of the monitoring board should be appointed by the president
"So it is not unusual. It is needed to maintain good governance," President Jokowi added.
President Jokowi also said that KPK should be able to issue a letter of investigation termination. He stated that the policy is needed to protect human rights.
President Jokowi earlier signed a Presidential Letter (Supres) on revision to the Law Number 30 of 2002 on KPK.
"Corruption is our common enemy. I want KPK to play central role in eradicating corruption," President Jokowi remarked.
