Jakarta: Incumbent President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's running mate Ma'ruf Amin is reportedly planning to meet with Prabowo Subianto's vice presidential candidate Sandiaga Uno in the near future.
"Both vice presidential candidates will meet each other in the near future. Let's wait together" the Jokowi-Ma'ruf National Campaign Team deputy secretary Verry Surya Hendrawan told the press on Friday.
"The meeting will take place before May 22. We need to ease political tensions," the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) politician noted.
Indonesia held its first-ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters elected the president, vice president and members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
Based on the official data from the General Elections Commission (KPU), as many as 192 million people were eligible to vote this year. In the meantime, more than 800 thousand polling stations were open across the country.
Similar with the 2014 presidential race, this year's presidential race was only contested by Jokowi and Prabowo. Five years ago, Jokowi won 53 percent of the votes against the Gerindra Party chairman.
According to reports, almost all quick count surveys from respectable pollsters showed that Jokowi is the likely winner of the 2019 presidential race. However, Jokowi urged his supporters to wait for KPU's official announcement on May 22.
On Thursday, the former Jakarta governor had a meeting with Democratic Party Joint Task Force head Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono. During the meeting, he discussed the latest political situations with former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's eldest son.
“The atmosphere was good during the meeting. I am glad that we could meet again,” Cabinet Secretary's website quoted the Democratic Party politician as saying.
"I hope that when the KPU announces the official result on 22 May, we will accept whatever the result will be," Agus noted.
