Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated North Maluku Governor Abdul Gani Kasuba and Deputy Governor Al Yasin Ali at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Friday, May 10, 2019.
During the inauguration ceremony, an official recited the Presidential Decree Number 38/P of 2019 on the Appointment of Governor and Deputy Governor of North Maluku Province for the 2019-2024 period. Afterwards, the pair took oath before signing the inauguration ceremony minutes.
"We will fulfill our obligations as governor and deputy governor as well as possible," the pair said.
Abdul and Al Yasin were endorsed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) during the 2018 North Maluku gubernatorial election. They won the election with 176,669 votes.
Indonesia held its first-ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters elected the president, vice president and members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
Based on the official data from the General Elections Commission (KPU), as many as 192 million people were eligible to vote this year. In the meantime, more than 800 thousand polling stations were open across the country.
Similar with the 2014 presidential race, this year's presidential race was only contested between the incumbent and Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto. Five years ago, the former Jakarta governor won 53 percent of the votes against the former Army general.
According to reports, almost all quick count surveys from respectable pollsters showed that Jokowi is the likely winner of the 2019 presidential race. However, Jokowi urged his supporters to wait for KPU's official announcement on May 22.
