Jakarta: Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali has stated the upcoming National Sports Week (PON) could be postponed until 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) pandemic.
PON is the larget multi-sport event in Indonesia. It is scheduled to take place in Papua Province in October-November 2020.
"There is an idea to hold PON in (October 2021) because it is the most suitable month. We will have fasting month and Lebaran holiday in April 2021. We will hold the U-20 FIFA World Cup in May-June. We will participate in the Olympics in July-August. We may also have National Sports Day event in September," the minister said here on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
"We then will participate in the Sea Games in Vietnam in November 2021. We will also have MotoGP and other events. So, October 2021 is the most suitable month," he added.
The central government has not yet decided to postpone the quadrennial event. It will continue to monitor the covid-19 pandemic in the country.
"If the pandemic is still ongoing at the time, we cannot hold the event," he stated.
