Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has officially declared the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) pandemic in Indonesia as a national disaster.
The move was based on Presidential Decree Number 12 Year 2020 regarding the Status of Non-Natural Disaster Covid-19 Pandemic as a National Disaster. The decree was signed by the former Jakarta governor on Monday, April 13, 2020.
"Declaring the non-natural disaster that is caused by the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) as a national disaster," the decree stated.
"Governors, regents and mayors as the heads of regional covid-19 task forces must synergize local policies with national policies," it stated.
As of Monday noon, April 13, 2020, the National Task Force for Acceleration of Covid-19 Handling has recorded 4,557 confirmed covid-19 cases, 380 recoveries and 399 reported deaths.
To tackle the spread of virus, a number of regions have been allowed to implement large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), including Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang.
