Jakarta: The Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) has decided to merge PT Bank BRIsyariah Tbk, PT Bank Syariah Mandiri, and PT Bank BNI syariah in a bid to boost development of Islamic economy in Indonesia.
PT Bank BRIsyariah Tbk, PT Bank Syariah Mandiri, and PT Bank BNI syariah are subsidiaries of Bank BRI, Bank Mandiri and Bank BNI, respectively.
"This step is historic for all of us," said SOEs Minister Erick Thohir here on Tuesday.
According to the Minister, as a country with the larget Muslim population in the world, Indonesia needs to have a strong and competitive Islamic bank.
"To that end, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of SOEs, has decided to sign a conditional merger agreement between three national Islamic banks, namely PT Bank BRIsyariah Tbk, PT Bank Syariah Mandiri, and PT Bank BNI Syariah.
According to reports, total assets of of the three national Islamic banks stand at Rp245.87 trillion.
