Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo have said that Indonesian people should support local products to help boost the country's economy amid the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.
President Jokowi officially launched a national movement dubbed #BanggaBuatanIndonesia (#ProudofIndonesianProducts) on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
"So, we will not depend on imported products anymore," President Jokowi stated at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
"We must appreciate the works of our fellow citizens. We must respect them. We must support them," the former Jakarta governor stated.
The covid-19 pandemic, which broke out at the beginning of 2020 in China and has been spreading to many countries including Indonesia, affected Indonesia’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2020.
Indonesia’s economic growth stood at 2.97 percent year-on-year (yoy) in the first quarter of 2020, down from 4.97 percent (yoy) in the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, domestic consumption stood at 2.84 percent (yoy), far lower than the performance in the fourth quarter of 2019 of 4.97 percent (yoy).
