Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo asked national banks to expand to remote areas, including Papua. According to him, regions in eastern Indonesia also need banking services.
"This is Indonesia, Indonesia is not only in Sudirman, Thamrin. But there are Nduga, Wamena, Yahukimo, places like this needs to be looked after as well," Jokowi said in his speech at the Indonesia Banking Expo, Jakarta on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.
Jokowi said that national banks need to open branches in remote areas. Bank officials must see the economic situation of the people on the border areas.

"Don't just have an office in Jakarta. Open a branch office in Wamena," he explained.
In addition, Jokowi also instructed banks to provide funds to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Although lending to large companies is more benificial, he argued that banks are obliged to spending MSMEs.
"I invite all of us to start paying attention to them (MSMEs) for the future of our nation and country," concluded Jokowi.
