Jakarta: The Agriculture Ministry has decided to offer staples at low prices at 49 points of sale in Jakarta in a bid to stabilize prices and prevent panic buying.
"Today, we limited our operations to 10 markets," said head of the Food Security Agency at the Agriculture Ministry, Agung Hendriadi, at Pasar Minggu in Jakarta, Thursday, March 19, 2020.
The Ministry organized the sale of three staples, sugar, rice, and broiler eggs, simultaneously on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 10 locations — Kalideres market, Pasar Baru Metro market, Kalibaru market, Tanah Abang market, Gondangdia market, Pluit market, Glodok market, Tebet Barat market, Rawa Badak market, Johar Baru market, and Toko Tani Indonesia Center (TTIC), located at Pasar Minggu.

Under the ministry’s market operation, sugar is being sold at Rp12,500 per kilogram, rice at Rp8,500 per kilogram, and broiler eggs at Rp23,000 per kilogram.
Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said that the move in Jakarta was aimed at controlling prices and ensuring food accessibility so that people do not have to worry about supply and they don’t feel the need to resort to panic buying.
Syahrul asserted that the Agriculture Ministry will work with business stakeholders to ensure sufficient food stocks in the market. He also urged businesses to not raise prices irrationally with the motive of increasing profit. (Antara)
