Jakarta: The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that Indonesia's tourism sector will be constrained by the impact of the spread of the coronavirus.
BPS head Suhariyanto said the Chinese government has banned its citizens from traveling abroad to prevent the spread of the virus. Vice versa, the government has temporarily suspended permits for all airlines heading to or arriving from China.
"If we look at the Chinese government's ban on visiting here and vice versa, it will definitely be affected," Suhariyanto said at the BPS Office, Central Jakarta on Tuesday, January 3, 2020.

Moreover, Suhariyanto said, the majority of foreign tourists who come to Indonesia are Chinese citizens. For example, throughout 2019, the number of tourists from China who came to Indonesia reached 2.07 million people or 12 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals.
"If there is a definite ban, it will affect the number of foreign tourist arrivals, certainly," Suhariyanto said.
While in December 2019 during the holiday season, tourists from China occupy the third position with 125.6 thousand arrivals or 11.2 percent of the total arrivals.
"So, if we see during 2019 the number of foreign tourists from China was around two million, it will definitely affect the number," he explained.
