Besides the food, beverages and tobacco group, the self care and other services group also contributed greatly to last month's inflation. According to the agency, the group posted an inflation of 0.46 percent.
This month, the consumer price index (CPI), was calculated by using the base year of 2018 (2018=100) and covering 90 cities all across Indonesia. From 2014-2019, the CPI was calculated by using the base year of 2012 (2012 = 100) and covering 82 cities which consists of 33 provincial capitals and 49 big cities.
From 90 surveyed cities, as many as 79 cities experienced inflation last month. On the other hand, the remaining 11 cities experienced deflation.
"In January, inflation was caused by prices of chilies, fish, cooking oil and cigarette, while deflation was caused by prices of air transportation, fuel and chicken meat," the BPS chairman remarked.
